Key Considerations for Producing High-Quality Cast Steel Nodes

Cast steel nodes feature complex structural geometries, strict chemical composition control requirements and high performance standards, which make the casting process highly challenging. To deliver qualified castings, quality control must run through the whole workflow, including raw material selection, casting process design, mold precision management, heat treatment, chemical analysis, mechanical property testing and final inspection.
Raw Material Composition
High-quality molten steel is the foundation of qualified cast steel nodes. The molten steel adopted shall contain low impurity levels. Strictly limit harmful elements such as sulfur (S) and phosphorus (P), to guarantee the chemical composition, mechanical properties and weldability of finished castings.
Casting Process
The casting process directly determines both internal integrity and surface quality of castings. Engineers need to develop practical casting processes that comply with design specifications according to the node’s structure and technical requirements. Most structural cast steel nodes have intricate shapes and high dimensional accuracy requirements. Some exterior surfaces cannot be machined after casting. The precision and surface finish of casting molds directly govern the dimension and appearance of cast steel parts. Therefore, mold precision must be under stringent control.
Heat Treatment
As-cast steel has coarse grain structures and insufficient mechanical properties, which often fail to meet structural service requirements. Heat treatment must be performed in accordance with relevant standards and specifications. Common heat treatment options include annealing, normalizing and quenching & tempering. Prior to heat treatment, develop a tailored heat treatment process based on casting dimensions, structure and furnace conditions. Arrange castings properly inside the furnace to achieve uniform temperature distribution. The heat treatment furnace should be equipped with automatic temperature control systems to secure consistent heat treatment outcomes.
Inspection
Final inspection before delivery is the critical last checkpoint for cast steel quality. The inspection scope covers chemical composition analysis, mechanical property testing, visual examination and non-destructive testing. Any non-conforming castings are prohibited from shipment and delivery. Chemical analysis shall be carried out by melting batch. Mechanical property tests are implemented by heat treatment batch. Test samples can be separately cast test blocks or attached test coupons. Use attached test coupons whenever practical.
